There are several areas of the medical field devoted to well being. These include the fields of health, fitness, quality of life, and mental health. It may seem counterintuitive to think about the overall wellbeing of a sick person, but in reality that very thing is the key to a rapid and successful recovery.

People in good spirits not only have better health, fitness is less of a chore for them. They are less likely to be obese and less likely to get sick. If they do fall ill, people who rate their well being as “good” overall don’t get as sick, spend less time ill, and recover more quickly than those with poor opinion of their wellbeing.

Is this a case of the placebo effect? It could be. Health and fitness experts say that a person’s outlook on life is a very real factor in just about every aspect of their health, from metabolism to immune system strength. After all, even if it’s all in your head, like some will tell you; if it works; doesn’t that mean that putting effort into maintaining a good state of mind a worthwhile endeavor?
